I know, I know, another Fall project. I just can’t help myself this year. Also prepare for another one in the next few days…but it’s also winter related so it doesn’t fully count as a Fall project lol. Is it also acceptable to say “lol” in blog posts? Because I do. I can’t help it.
On to the project!
I made this FALL canvas over the weekend…
I’ve seen similar paintings done on wood, but I had some extra canvases laying around and thought I’d paint something up! I love the look of dark brown text on white, so I thought this would be perfect. It looked a little plain on a white background, so I added some rough lines in there to give it a faux shiplap look. In the end I love how it turned out, and if you do too, check out the rest of this post to see how I created it!
Step one:
I started out with a blank 18″x24″ canvas (found here in a double pack!), and got out a ruler. I wanted a straight look to my text, so I actually used the ruler to give straight edges to the letters, but I really do think this would look good with an imperfect look as well. Roughly sketching out the letters would absolutely work as well.
I didn’t press down hard with the pencil so this next picture is really light, but here’s how my letters turned out…
Step Two:
Next I took some Martha Stewart acrylic paint in vanilla bean (found here) and painted over all the letters…
And here’s how that looked after I was done…See what I mean about it looking sort of plain with the blank background? If the canvas had been a little smaller I think it would have been perfect, but since I was using a biggie I decided it needed a little something extra…
Step Three:
So again I took my ruler, and randomly created some broken lines every few inches. Notice how I didn’t do a straight line all the way down, I cut off in some spots to give it more of an unfinished/rustic look.
Step Four:
I then went over the lines with some of that brown paint, mixed with some Martha Stewart white paint in wedding cake (found here). I didn’t try to make these lines look perfect either. I love how they actually curve a little in some spots…
Step Five:
To make it look a little more blended, I used a bit more of the white paint to soften the lines…
And there you have it! Your FALL canvas with a faux shiplap background to hang every Fall season! I love this guy, so adorable! He’s hanging in our dining room as we speak.
