I have been looking for the perfect new desk for my office for what seems like FOREVER. And then in January Charlie randomly found a beauuuuutiful wooden desk set at Home Goods. And when I say beautiful it’s kind of an understatement. It’s so nice it looks like he paid $5,000 for it when it was less than $1,000. Awesome deal – but anyway, I thought about getting it for my office first, but I’ve had my mind dead set on a white desk for my office. I have a theme going in here – white, grey, a little bit of black. The desk he found was dark wood, and it just wouldn’t have matched my theme, and I’m not messing with my theme people! You other office decor obsessed freaks will know what I mean 🙂
So after he randomly found a desk, I decided it was my mission to find THE perfect desk for me. I searched online, nothing (at a decent price). I searched Home Goods and other local stores, nothing. Then we decided to give a local consignment shop a try. Ding Ding Ding! I am SO glad we did, because we found a winner! I walked right by it at first. And then I saw it right before we were leaving and Charlie was instantly drawn to it. He usually knows more about how much something is worth more than I do, so when he did a little happy dance over this desk I knew it had to be special. It’s an industrial style desk with solid wood top (and when I say solid I mean HEAVY solid), and a metal base with casters.

Looks a little “blah” in the store, but the more I thought about it after we left, the more I wanted it. We had put it on hold to think about it, and two days later I had my mind made up and we picked it up! We had to unscrew the top of the desk from the metal bottom to get it into our car, so I worked with one piece at a time when we got it home. I cleaned the top, and scrubbed the hell out of the metal bottom. Let’s just say the caster wheels were nasty and some kind of fur was stuck in there. YUUUCK.
For the wooden top, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to sand and stain it, or just paint it. I decided to try and find a glossy paint meant for projects like this, and I found an awesome product by Americana Decor called Maxx Gloss high gloss paint. Check it out here. I ended up using 2 full containers of 8oz. paint.
Not gonna lie, the paint was kind of difficult to use at first, I ended up messing up my first layer because it looked blotchy. Work quickly with this paint and it will turn out awesome.
I let it sit for a week without using it just to play it safe – I’m sure it would have been fine the next day honestly.
