Super easy project for you and your little ones! I Super easy project for you and your little ones! I painted a small canvas black and dipped Sophie’s right foot in white paint. We did it upside down to put little ghost faces on the heels. I painted on a simple “B” and it was finished! So cute and love that we have this to put out every Halloween 👻 🎃

DIY Canvas Flower With Scrapbook Paper

I found a really cool looking flower picture on Pinterest, and decided I wanted to create my own version. All I did was get a canvas, which I had some left over canvas from when I took some painting classes (link at the bottom of this post to where I bought mine). I painted the canvas black with oil paint (you can use acrylic though if you really want it to dry quickly. I let my canvas dry for about 3 days with the oil paint).  I then took some scrapbook paper that I already had (great selection on Amazon), and used all of the black, white and grey pieces I could find. I cut them into petal shapes for the flower we’re going to create.

DIY Canvas Flower Using Scrapbook Paper and Mod Podge

Here are the products I used – glue stick, mod podge and the cut up scrapbook paper.

I also used a sponge to apply the mod podge to the canvas. It worked great!

I laid out the cut up scrapbook paper into the shape I liked for the flower, then I took each piece and put a little glue on the back to keep it in place for when I used the mod podge.

DIY Canvas Flower - Petals Laid Out

Here it is with a layer of mod podge over it, I ended up doing 2 layers. I let the first layer dry for about 15-20 minutes. Don’t worry – it dries clear.

And here’s the final result! I love it! I think it’s so cute and would look good anywhere in the new house, but I originally was thinking more for my new office. I used the black, white and greys to match the office, but obviously this would look great with any colored paper you want!

If you’re looking for canvas (the size I used – 18″ x 24″), click here for a link for a 2 pack at a GREAT price! Click here for a great deal on the type of Mod Podge I bought too!

Let me know what you all think! I would love to see your creations if any of you decide to do this project 🙂

I made one! I LOVE IT!!!!
I’d love to post a picture, but I don’t see how to attach one.
So, description, I used an old 12×12 canvas that’s been floating around my house for years and I used a Cardinal Red acrylic to cover the entire canvas, then I used some black distress paint that said that it would crackle as it dries. I was expecting a black finish with red showing through the crackles, what I got was a beautiful, antiquated-looking rust color with crackles. I LOVE IT!
Then I used some cardboard to cut out some patterns for the different shaped/sized petals that I wanted to use. I had some fun scrapbook paper that I used to make the pedals out of, so I made like 7 big pedals, and then 8 smaller pedals out of cheerful, bright and colorful paper and then I cut about 7 black and white pedals to frame the front of the flower and then a cheerful yellow and blue circle for the center of the flower. I created the layout of the flower all on the floor the way I wanted it to lay on the canvas and I mod-podge most of it together as it lay.
I then transferred it to the canvas and laid it out the canvas to see how I wanted it, and then put a layer of mod-pod all over the canvas and laid the flower on top. Then I put a thin layer of mod-podge all over it (too thin), then after that layer dried up very quickly, I lost my inhibition toward using a lot and I laid down a VERY thick coat of the mod-podge and then another Thick coat. 😀
IT LOOKED GREAT!!!! After that dried, I sprayed a Mod-Podge Clear Acrylic Sealer over it all.
I used high gloss Mod-podge and sealer and it looks great!
I can’t figure out how to post any pictures, but maybe this link will work to see how it turned out. 😀

Wow, that is such a compliment! Thank you so much! I am so glad you liked mine and went ahead to create one with your own twist. LOVE the idea of using the red acrylic with black distress paint over it – I would like to try that sometime 🙂 I checked yours out and I think it’s great! DIY projects like this are awesome, especially when you can choose whatever kind of paint and paper you want. Thanks again!

Hey! I really love this, and I’m seriously considering making a really big one (3×7 feet or so) for a large wall in my house.

I am planning to do one or two smaller ones first, to test it out before I commit to the big one. Also, 2-packs of little canvases are on sale this week. 🙂

One question: do you think this might work with fabric instead of paper?

    Thank you so much Erin!

I think making a huge one would be so cool and unique to have on an entire wall! I’d love to see it if you make one 🙂

I do think it could work with fabric, that might actually give a better effect! I would just dab one side with glue first and make sure it’s completely sticking to the canvas before you mod podge, otherwise it could get pretty messy and annoying trying to straighten out the fabric pieces!

Thanks for the reply Rissa. I think I’m going to try this out with fabric. I’ll let you know how it turns out!

    Hi there Rissa.
I feel in love with your work.
I need one for my small living room.
I’m wondering, can I use Japanese washi paper instead
of scrapbook paper ? I’m not sure if we have it here in Japan.

    Thanks.

    More power,

    gigi

I bet Japanese washi paper would work! Just as long as it’s not too thin – so it doesn’t rip when putting mod podge over it. Hope it turns out good! – R

Thanks for the quick reply Ris.
I guess I have to look for scrapbook paper.
    Washi paper are really thin.
    Thanks anyway.

    Cheers,

    gigi

Hey Gigi! Try a spray adhesive for the washi paper, it might work to use a spray adhesive that you don’t need to brush on and possibly rip the paper. I’d try it on a scrap piece of paper before trying on a canvas, but I do believe that you might be able to make that work. 😉
Best of Luck and post a picture if you can of the completed work!!! 😀

Oh, another thought, wash any residual tackiness off your hands between applications of the spray adhesive so that sticky fingers don’t rip the paper. Washi paper will likely be more time consuming, but possibly doable.

I’m not sure if this was already answered but about how big did you make your petals?

Hi Jayme! I made them different sizes, but on average they are about 3″ long, 1″ wide if I had to guess! – Rissa
