I wasn’t sure if I wanted to blog this project, but since I love the outcome I figured why not? It was super simple, and overall, only took a couple hours (including dry time). I also used things I already had around the house, so it was a FREE project! Doesn’t get any better than that.
I started out with this sign I bought on sale somewhere, and honestly I bought it with the intention of re-purposing it. It’s a cute sign, just not something I wanted to hang in our own home.
So I painted the sign navy blue with some acrylic paint that I had, and then I added some texture to it…
I used this kit I got by Martha Stewart, and OMG guys, you need this kit if you like doing painting projects. It’s full of amazing things that are worth well over $15! I used this specific one below, and the arrow is pointing to the side I used to add the textured stripes. You just brush on some paint, and then use this by dragging it down, wipe of excess and repeat.
While waiting for the paint to dry, I fired up my Cricut and created the saying that I wanted to stencil onto the sign. If you don’t have a Cricut (then what are you waiting for, they are amazing!), you can always free hand the letters. It’s not meant to be perfect so don’t even worry about it. Another idea – use stickers and then mod podge over them to get them to stick on for good.
And once the sign was completely dried, I placed the stencil on top (slightly crooked, but hey, it gives it character)…I used a foam brush to pounce white paint over the stencil…
And prayed it didn’t bleed too much right before I took it off…
Here it is right after I took off the stencil. Not too bad! I knew it would bleed a little because of the texture I added onto it, but I did about 10 minutes of “cleaning” it up with a small paint brush after this and it looked great.
Here it is after paint touch ups! I like that it has a “worn” vibe going on. It’s not perfect, and I like that about it.
